But overall, it's a good point. My buddy Mike says that Otis is a liar, compared to God's own truth by way of Sam Cooke. I think he means that Otis embellishes the notes instead of singing them a lot of the time. (There's actually a great word for what he's doing: melisma) He's probably right, but when he hits that first long note in "I've been loving you too long," I almost have to leave the room, even if there isn't anyone else in the room, because I'm so embarrassed at myself for getting my ass handed to me by a note. Chris pulls up at the bar to order and I just nod, say "what's up," and return to my newspaper. The drunk guy on the other side beams at Chris and says, "Dude! How crazy is it that you walked in... <em>and your song is playing</em>!" Chris, without looking at the dude, says "happens all the time my man..." and turns with his drinks to join Kate in the corner.
