Denny’s in the News
January 4th, 2008 by DamonFirst, Robert Jamieson details how drunken/disruptive/occasionally violent late night customers and loiterers have led the SODO Denny’s (Seattle’s last) to close it’s doors on late Saturday nights. It’s a bummer of a story, but kudos to Jamieson for using the word “numskulls”; I’d been hoping for “hooligans”, personally, but as always, the piece was boosted by a foray into archaic lexicon.
Also in the P-I, the Landmark Preservation Board is at it again. This time, they’ve held a preliminary vote to designate the 15th and Market Denny’s a landmark, potentially thwarting a big condo development deal. Anybody else detect a whiff of underhanded downzoning—especially given other recent landmarking news (such as Peter Steinbrueck’s sweeping and seemingly rushed list of downtown buildings to preserve)?
PS–Denny’s, if you’re reading this, bring back the Veggie Cheese Melt. I loved that sandwich. So did my mom.

Hi Damon,
With regards to your comment about the Veggie Cheese Melt – I love that sandwich too! I have been racking my brain trying to remember what exactly they put on that sandwich – so far I have come up with : cheese, sprouts, cucumbers, onions?, avocado/guacamole, maybe tomato? That is all I can remember – and of course it has been so long, that even these items could be wrong. Do you remember what they put on them? If so, will you let me know?
Thanks!

i didn’t remember the sprouts. onion sounds right–there was definitely something that gave it some spice (though perhaps the onion was in the guacamole). i’ll ask my mom and see if she remembers.

i checked with my mom. she didn’t recall the sprouts either. all she remembered was guacamole, cucumber, tomato, and, of course, cheese. she did say that when my late grandmother (also a huge veggie cheese melt fan) was visiting in 2003, the two of them went to a denny’s and requested cheese melts, which denny’s made, despite their absence from the menu. so that might be worth a shot.

Thanks so much Damon! That sounds about right….maybe I will try to go in and order one and see what happens. Otherwise, I will just make one at home. Thanks to your mom too!

What type of cheese was it? Maybe swiss or swiss and american. I know there were cucumbers, tomato, guacamole, I don’t think onions. I know there were pickles on mine but they might have been the ones that came with the fries. Was there a sauce or dressing?

Veggie Cheese Melt
Whole Wheat bread
American, Jack, and Swiss cheese
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Alfalfa sprouts
Guacamole
Butter the bread, place butter down on the grill, add cheese to both slices. When cheese is melted, quickly add tomatoes, guac, and sprouts to one half, then cukes to other half, assemble quickly, cut, and serve. If done right, the veggies will still be crisp and cold, the cheese will be melted, and the bread nicely crusted.
